I’ll always remember being a kid, cuddling up in blankets and sleeping bags to watch meteor showers through our picture window growing up (Do they still call them “picture windows”?). It was kind of a special activity – watching meteor showers or lightning storms – and you knew it was a special activity because my mother would let us eat Captain Crunch out of the box like popcorn by the fistful, and that NEVER happened on a regular day.

Today, as an adult fumbling around a tech-enrenched world, I find meteor showers are the perfect antidote for modern life. They aren’t on demand. They won’t pause and replay what you missed. No screenshots. No sound effects. Just wait under a big night sky and reflect on all that is so much bigger than us 🙂

What is a meteor shower?

A meteor shower happens when Earth passes through a trail of space dust. The tiny pieces burn up in our atmosphere and make bright streaks of light that look like shooting stars.


Major Meteor Showers of the Year

There is almost always something happening in the night sky! Meteor showers occur at predictable times because Earth travels around the Sun along the same path each year. When it reaches a trail of comet or asteroid debris, we get another meteor shower.

Did You Know?

Most meteor shower particles are surprisingly tiny—some are only about the size of a grain of sand. Even something that small can make a bright streak when it enters Earth’s atmosphere at tremendous speed.


Deeper Dive – Meteor Shower Characteristics

The Quadrantids have one of the shortest peak viewing periods of any major meteor shower. The best part of the show may last only a few hours!

  • Name: Quadrantid Meteor Shower
  • When: Late December through mid-January
  • Best time: Usually around January 3–4
  • Why “Quadrantids”? The shower was named after an old constellation called Quadrans Muralis, which is no longer officially recognized. The meteors now appear to come from an area near the constellation Boötes.
  • Where do they come from? The Quadrantids are believed to come from debris left behind by an asteroid-like object called 2003 EH1.
  • Super speedy: Quadrantid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 25 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? Under excellent dark-sky conditions, you may see 60–120 meteors per hour during the peak.

The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers. People in China wrote about seeing Lyrid meteors more than 2,600 years ago!

  • Name: Lyrid Meteor Shower
  • When: Mid-April through late April
  • Best time: Usually around April 21–22
  • Why “Lyrids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Lyra, the Lyre.
  • Where do they come from? The Lyrids are created by tiny pieces of dust and debris left behind by Comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher).
  • Super speedy: Lyrid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 29 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? During a typical year, you may see around 10–20 meteors per hour under dark skies.

Halley’s Comet is responsible for two meteor showers each year! Its debris creates the Eta Aquariids in May and the Orionids in October.

  • Name: Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower
  • When: Mid-April through late May
  • Best time: Usually around May 5–6
  • Why “Eta Aquariids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Aquarius, near a star called Eta Aquarii.
  • Where do they come from? The Eta Aquariids are created by tiny pieces of dust and debris left behind by the famous Halley’s Comet.
  • Super speedy: Eta Aquariid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 41 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? Viewers in the Southern Hemisphere may see around 40–60 meteors per hour near the peak. Fewer are usually visible from the Northern Hemisphere.

The Delta Aquariids often overlap with the Perseid Meteor Shower, so during late July and early August, you might spot meteors from two different meteor showers on the same night!

  • Name: Delta Aquariid Meteor Shower
  • When: Mid-July through late August
  • Best time: Usually around July 29–30
  • Why “Delta Aquariids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Aquarius, near a star called Delta Aquarii.
  • Where do they come from? The Delta Aquariids are believed to come from debris left behind by Comet 96P/Machholz.
  • Super speedy: Delta Aquariid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 25 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? During the peak, you may see around 15–20 meteors per hour under dark skies. The shower is usually easier to see from the Southern Hemisphere and southern parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Every August, Earth travels through a trail of tiny bits of dust and rock left behind by a comet called Swift-Tuttle. When those tiny pieces zoom into Earth’s atmosphere, they heat up and create bright streaks of light across the sky. We call these meteors or shooting stars.

  • Name: Perseid Meteor Shower
  • When: Mid-July through late August
  • Best time: Usually around August 11–13
  • Why “Perseid”? The meteors seem to come from the direction of the constellation Perseus.
  • Super speedy: Perseid meteors travel about 37 miles per second!
  • No telescope needed: Just find a dark place, look up, and give your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
  • During a good year, you might see dozens of meteors per hour from a dark location.

Halley’s Comet also creates the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower in May, so Earth passes through its trail of space debris twice each year!

  • Name: Orionid Meteor Shower
  • When: Early October through early November
  • Best time: Usually around October 20–22
  • Why “Orionids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Orion, the Hunter.
  • Where do they come from? The Orionids are created by tiny pieces of dust and debris left behind by Halley’s Comet.
  • Super speedy: Orionid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 41 miles per second!
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark spot away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at as much of the sky as possible.
  • How many can you see? During a good year, you may see around 10–20 meteors per hour under dark skies.

About every 33 years, the Leonids can produce a spectacular meteor storm, when hundreds or even thousands of meteors may streak across the sky in an hour!

  • Name: Leonid Meteor Shower
  • When: Early November through early December
  • Best time: Usually around November 17–18
  • Why “Leonids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Leo, the Lion.
  • Where do they come from? The Leonids are created by tiny pieces of dust and debris left behind by Comet Tempel-Tuttle.
  • Super speedy: Leonid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 44 miles per second, making them some of the fastest meteors we see!
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? During a typical year, you may see around 10–15 meteors per hour under dark skies.

The Geminids are often considered one of the best meteor showers of the entire year. They can produce lots of bright meteors, and some may even appear colorful!

  • Name: Geminid Meteor Shower
  • When: Late November through December
  • Best time: Usually around December 13–14
  • Why “Geminids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Gemini, the Twins.
  • Where do they come from? Unlike most meteor showers, the Geminids come from debris left behind by an asteroid-like object called 3200 Phaethon, rather than a typical comet.
  • Super speedy: Geminid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 22 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? Under excellent dark-sky conditions, you may see more than 100 meteors per hour near the peak.

The Ursids peak close to the winter solstice, making them one of the last major meteor showers you can watch each year!

  • Name: Ursid Meteor Shower
  • When: Mid-December through late December
  • Best time: Usually around December 21–22
  • Why “Ursids”? The meteors appear to come from the direction of the constellation Ursa Minor, also known as the Little Bear.
  • Where do they come from? The Ursids are created by tiny pieces of dust and debris left behind by Comet 8P/Tuttle.
  • Super speedy: Ursid meteors enter Earth’s atmosphere at about 21 miles per second.
  • No telescope needed: Find a dark place away from bright lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up at a wide area of the sky.
  • How many can you see? During a typical year, you may see around 5–10 meteors per hour under dark skies.

What is a meteor shower?

A meteor shower happens when Earth travels through a trail of tiny pieces of dust and rock in space. When these particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at very high speeds, they heat up and create bright streaks of light in the sky. We call these meteors, although people often call them “shooting stars.”

What causes meteor showers?

Most meteor showers happen when Earth passes through debris left behind by a comet. Comets leave trails of dust and small particles as they travel around the Sun. When Earth crosses one of these trails, some of the particles enter our atmosphere and become visible as meteors.

Are shooting stars really stars?

No! A shooting star is not actually a star. It is a meteor—a small piece of space debris that becomes extremely hot and glows as it travels through Earth’s atmosphere.

What is the best meteor shower for kids to watch?

The Perseid Meteor Shower is a great choice for families because it peaks in August, when many children can stay outside later without worrying about school the next morning or cold winter temperatures. The Geminids in December can also produce an impressive number of bright meteors.

Why do meteor showers happen at the same time every year?

Earth follows approximately the same path around the Sun each year. This means our planet passes through the same trails of comet or asteroid debris at about the same time each year. That’s why astronomers can predict when annual meteor showers will occur.

What is the difference between a meteor, meteoroid, and meteorite?

A meteoroid is a small piece of rock or debris traveling through space. When it enters Earth’s atmosphere and produces a streak of light, we call it a meteor. If part of it survives the trip through the atmosphere and reaches the ground, it is called a meteorite.
