STEM challenges are hands-on learning activities that encourage kids to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through real-world problem solving. Instead of simply reading about concepts, children are invited to design, build, test, observe, and improve their ideas—just like real scientists and engineers do.

Not STEM:

“Build a bridge from popsicle sticks.”

STEM:

“Build a bridge that can hold 20 pennies using only popsicle sticks and tape.”

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

It’s a framework used in education to group these subjects because they’re deeply connected in real-world problem solving—not taught as silos, but as integrated skills.

In kid-friendly terms:

  • Science = asking questions and exploring the world
  • Technology = using tools and systems
  • Engineering = building, designing, and solving problems
  • Math = measuring, counting, patterns, and logic

There’s also STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math 🙂

Problem-Based (Not Craft-Based)

There must be a problem, question, or challenge to solve.

Not STEM:

“Build a bridge from popsicle sticks.”

STEM:

“Build a bridge that can hold 20 pennies using only popsicle sticks and tape.”

👉 A constraint + goal is required.

Inquiry-Driven

Students must:

  • Ask questions
  • Make predictions
  • Test ideas
  • Observe outcomes
  • Revise their thinking

If there’s no investigation, it’s not STEM — it’s just an activity.


Design Process Present

The project must follow a thinking cycle:

Plan → Build → Test → Improve → Reflect

If there’s no redesign or iteration, it’s not real engineering.


Integration of Disciplines

It must involve at least one STEM domain meaningfully, ideally more than one:

  • Science → properties, forces, life systems, energy, environment
  • Technology → tools, systems, data use
  • Engineering → design, structure, problem-solving
  • Math → measurement, patterns, data, logic

STEM is applied learning, not isolated content.


Evidence of Thinking

Students must show:

  • Planning
  • Reasoning
  • Decision-making
  • Testing logic
  • Reflection

If the outcome looks the same for every student → ❌ not STEM
If every solution looks different → ✅ STEM


The STEM Test (Quick Filter)

Ask these 5 questions:

  1. Is there a problem to solve?
  2. Are students making decisions?
  3. Are they testing something?
  4. Can they fail and redesign?
  5. Are multiple solutions possible?

If yes to all → it qualifies as STEM.


What Does NOT Qualify as STEM

  • Coloring pages
  • Step-by-step crafts
  • Copy-the-example builds
  • Worksheets without application
  • Follow-the-directions kits
  • Same-outcome projects
  • Decoration projects
  • Pre-assembled models
  • “Science-themed” art with no investigation

These can be educational — but they are not STEM.


What DOES Qualify

Examples:

  • Designing a shelter that stays dry
  • Creating a boat that floats with weight
  • Building a tower that resists wind
  • Filtering dirty water
  • Designing animal habitats
  • Building a bridge with material limits
  • Creating a marble maze with rules
  • Testing plant growth variables
  • Engineering playground structures

If you’re starting a STEM club or a classroom STEM corner, think in terms of flexible tools, open-ended materials, and reusable systems—not fancy kits. You want items that invite building, testing, tinkering, and problem-solving.

Gather simple, accessible materials.
